Online Roundtable Series | Southeast Asia Prides: Spaces for Queer Joy and Activism

The final roundtable brought together Pride organizers from across Southeast Asia to discuss what Pride means in their respective contexts. The panel featured Natalino Ornai Guterres (Dili Pride, Timor-Leste), Louela Marie V. Prado (Iloilo Pride, The Philippines), Purba Widnyana (QLC Bali, Indonesia), and Quang Tran (Hanoi Pride, Vietnam), with Megan Steven (Malaysia) as the moderator and Jirajade Wisetdonwail (Bangkok Pride, Thailand) as the discussant.
The discussion explored how Pride events are organized within different social and political landscapes, the challenges faced by organizers, and the ways they navigate these difficulties while ensuring that joy remains at the heart of their work.
With funding cuts impacting several Pride events in the region, many organizers have been forced to find alternative ways to sustain their initiatives. However, this challenge has also provided a moment of reflection on the essence of Pride—not just as a celebration, but also as a protest and a space for community solidarity. Despite the obstacles, Pride continues to embody resistance and lead to joy.
The conversation also touched on the need for rest and care among organizers. To sustain the energy and passion behind these events, it is crucial to recognize the labor involved and ensure that those working to create Pride spaces have the time and support needed to continue their efforts in the long run.
